It can be quite a headache to experience Windows XP freezing. It’s definitely one of those things you can live without.
But when it does happen (with Windows it can happen often) what
do you do?
Well, I’ve set up this article to give you some general troubleshooting tips to help you figure out why it’s happening in Windows XP. Freezing is mostly caused by software errors.
But it can also be caused by hardware errors. I’m only going to cover how to troubleshoot those software errors since if it’s a hardware error there’s not much you can do, other than replace the faulty component.
So let’s get started, and see how you can troubleshoot this problem – and stop seeing the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) so often.
For starters, you’ll want to look at your System event log for error messages. This will give you a clue as to what could be going on.
To access this log:
Go to your Start Menu.
Click on Control Panel.
Then click on “Performance and Maintenance.”
Now click on Administrative Tools.
Finally, click on Computer Management.
Now, you’ll see Event Viewer. Click on it to get a list of event options to view. I recommend you check all three.

With this, when Windows XP is freezing, it should get logged in here. That’s how you’ll be clued in as to what the problem could be.
As I mentioned earlier, most of the time it’s a software issue, like a device driver, or program that didn’t load properly in MSCONFIG.
Another way you could troubleshoot Windows XP freezing is to go to MSCONFIG.
To access this, go to your Start menu in the lower left-hand corner of your screen and click it.
Now in the RUN textbox, type in MSCONFIG and hit enter.
This will bring up a dialog box.
From here, click the Startup tab. This gives you a list of all the programs that automatically load when Windows XP starts up.
Uncheck every program that isn’t necessary. Then here’s what you do:
Restart your computer once you’ve unchecked all the programs.
Then, go back into MSCONFIG and start adding (or checking) one program at a time.
Repeat as necessary.
This is simply the process of elimination at work. You’ll have to load one program at a time until you find the culprit.
Once you’ve done this and Windows XP is freezing still, then you’ve got to move on to a different approach.
The first, is to perform a simple disk cleanup. Go to your System Tools folder that’s located in the Accessories folder (Start>Programs>Accessories>SystemTools)
Now select disk cleanup. Check every box you see available. Then click ok.
This will delete unnecessary files that are bloating your computer’s hard drive and are possibly causing the Windows XP freezing problem.
The next step after this is to use a registry cleaner, as your problem could be a cluttered Windows XP registry.
For this, I’d highly recommend you get a software program in stead of doing it manually. I suggest X as it’s one of the best out there.
Once you’ve got the program installed, let it do it’s thing. Chances are it’ll find and fix a number of registry errors that can finally put an end to Windows XP freezing… letting you actually use your computer instead of wasting time and frustration trying to fix the darn thing!
To faster, zippier PC performance,
Eddie T.
