What’s more, you’ll end up avoiding what most people do, which is simply spend the money on buying a new computer (yikes!). As you’ll see, it’s not necessary to spend that kind of money to replace your system.

Instead, in this two part article, I’ll show you every possible option to speed up your pc. In part ONE, you’re going to learn how to improve performance by focusing on your computer’s software (hard drive).

In part TWO, I’ll give you actual hardware options that will make your pc MUCH faster.

Alright, let’s get down to business.

How to Speed Up Your PC Part 1 – Cleaning out your hard drive.

So there’s 5 things you can do software-wise that will improve your PC’s performance.

Here they are:

1.    Remove malware. This includes viruses, spyware and adware. The first step would be to run an anti-virus program. Usually your computer will come with one or you can purchase a good one for about $60. I recommend Norton AntiVirus as it’s one of the best and the one I use.

Once you’ve scanned your computer and rid it of any infections, it’s time to run an anti-spyware program. There are a few free options for this, but again, you’re better off spending the $20 bucks or so it’ll cost. For this, I recommend X. Run the scan and have it clean out all the spyware and adware it finds.

This alone should significantly improve your PC’s speed if it was infected.

Not that you’ve got this out of the way, let’s move on to the next step.

2.    Delete unnecessary files. This means uninstalling any programs you don’t use anymore. Also, make sure to run Windows free Disk Cleanup utility. This will delete temporary Internet files and other trash that’s slowing your system down. To access it, simply go to your Start Menu. Then go to Programs. Click on the Accessories Folder. Then, click System Tools, followed by Disk Clean up. There you’ll see a dialog box that let’s you pick out what you’d like to delete. Check everything and let it run it’s magic.

3.    Defragment your hard drive. This is the next step when it comes to learning how to speed up your PC. Throughout the course of your PC’s life, as you install and uninstall programs, you end up leaving a mess. Defraging your hard drive puts related files together, making it quicker to access instead of having to search for fragments on different places on the drive. Once again, you can defrag your hard drive within System Tools. It’s called Disk Defragmenter. I recommend you run it once (sometimes it can take a while, depending on how cluttered your hard drive is). Once you run the initial defrag, run it once a month to maintain optimal PC performance.

4.    Clean your registry. A messy registry can cause your computer to move slow and even crash from time to time. To prevent this, get a registry cleaner. A good option is X. Let it run a scan. Then let it fix all the registry errors it finds. You can do this manually. If that’s the choice you want to go for, check out the articles on this site on how to do that.

5.    Format your hard drive and start from scratch. If your hard drive is so beyond repair that doing these simple software fixes doesn’t improve the speed, you can format your hard drive and start anew. Only use this method if you’ve got the original windows install disk that may have come with your computer when you purchased it… or if you know what you’re doing. This option I only recommend as a last resort, and even then, something you should do only if you have quite a bit of technical know-how.

So there you have it. This is how to speed up your pc. Click on over to part 2 and I’ll show you how to speed up your pc using hardware upgrades.
