Hardware upgrades are a low-cost way to speed up pc performance. They give your computer an extra two years or so before having to get a new one to keep up with today’s constantly demanding software.
Let’s look at the most critical components to change out, and how they’ll affect performance.
Pc Performance booster #1 – RAM
RAM, short for random access memory, is probably the cheapest upgrade that will give you the biggest boost. Simply put, if you want to speed up pc performance, go this route first.
Before you upgrade your ram, take a look at your user’s manual. It will tell you how much RAM your computer can handle.
It will also tell you whether you need to upgrade you RAM chip set as a pair or single stick of memory.
Bottom line: give you system the maximum amount of RAM it can take for the best overall increase in speed.

Pc Performance Booster #2 – Dedicated Video Graphics card (with lots of onboard RAM!)
If you’re looking to speed up pc performance because you’re a gamer, then this is something you DEFINITELY want to do. Most pc’s come with integrated graphics cards right into the motherboard.
For gaming this is a bad thing, because your PC’s CPU has to stop and process the graphics in addition to all the other things it’s doing.
By getting a separate, dedicated graphics card, your CPU no longer has to worry about the graphics. The dedicated graphics card has it’s own CPU AND Ram to create all the images you’ll need.
When choosing a card, pick one that has a lot of RAM on board too. This will significantly improve performance and gameplay.
Pc Performance Booster #3 – CPU Upgrade
This is not for the faint of heart. But if you’re seriously wanting to upgrade without having to buy a new PC, getting a new processor may be an option.
It all depends on how much you want to spend before considering simply buying a new pc. Plus, it depends on your motherboard. Some motherboards make this option not really worth it, since they can’t support a much faster processor. Choose this option only if you know EXACTLY what you’re doing.
So there you have it. When you want to speed up pc performance, simply follow the tips in parts one and two of this article series. Remember you can either start by focusing on the software (hard drive) and doing things like deleting files, cleaning the registry etc. OR you can change out the hardware (physical devices) to speed up PC performance.
