How to Clean a Vista Registry in 5 Steps

To clean a Vista registry, you first have to know what a registry is.

The registry is where your PC keeps very important data it uses everyday. For example, any changes you make to your desktop, like the background gets logged into your registry. Any directories you create and any programs you install… or uninstall… also get logged into the registry.

Sometimes though, there are entries that your computer doesn’t need anymore. But despite this, the registry entry stays there, taking up space and processing power.Get your free RegDefense Scan

That’s when cleaning the Vista registry should be something you should do to improve your PC’s performance.

Of course the easiest option would be to run a registry cleaner, such as RegEAsy. It’s not expensive at all and it gets the job done safely and effectively.

There are also free tools out there but beware. They’re not all created equal. And some are nowhere near as good or effective at cleaning the registry as the paid programs are.

Alright. Onward.

So let’s say you don’t want to use registry cleaner software. You’re more of a do-it-yourselfer and want to try this on your own.

No problem. Windows Vista lets you clean out the registry manually.

Only thing is, you really need to know what you’re doing. Because one false move and you risk making your entire PC useless. And that’s never a good thing.

So before you attempt to clean the registry. Make sure you’ve backed up all your important data. Also, make sure to create a recovery disk — using Windows Vista — so that you have a way to boot your computer if something goes wrong or you accidentally delete a very important registry entry.

Now that we’ve got the precautions out of the way, here’s how to clean Vista registry in X simple steps:

Step 1: Click on the Microsoft Windows logo on the bottom left corner of your screen to bring up the list of programs and different options (this was formerly the “Start” menu in Windows XP)

Step 2: In the “search” text box (where it says “Start Search”), type in “regedit”. Press enter.

Step 3: You’ll see a dialog box pop up. This is where you can delete Windows Vista registry entries. On the left-hand side of the dialog box, you’ll see plenty of folders with names like HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, HKEY_USER and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

Step 4: Select the directory you want to clean out and then click on the little arrow icon next to the directory folder, to expand that directory and see what is in it.

Step 5: From there, it’s up to you to decide what to delete and what to keep. This shouldn’t be too hard if you’ve got some intimate knowledge of how the registry works. And remember, if you’re ever in doubt as to whether something is important or not… DON’T delete it. It could end up being an important registry entry Windows goes to frequently and deleting it can mess your system up.

All in all, learning how to clean Vista registry isn’t hard. It just takes a little know-how. And if any of this seems a little too tech-ish for you, seriously consider getting a professional registry cleaner software. It’s the safest, most effective way to clean out the Vista registry and get your computer performing like new again.
