How to Backup the Windows XP Registry

It’s pretty simple to backup a Windows XP registry.

And in this short guide, I’ll show you exactly what you need to do. Plus, I’ll also show you how to restore the registry once you’ve backed it up.

But first, let’s take a look at how to create a registry backup.Visit Error Fix

6 Steps to Backup Windows XP Registry

There are 3 ways you can go about creating a backup of the Windows XP registry.

The one I’m going to show you here is the simplest. In later articles, I’ll give you the two other more advanced ways to do it (it’s pretty dry reading!). But if you’re the kind of person that likes getting your “hands” dirty you might find it very useful.

One more thing before we get started. Just remember that whenever you mess around with your Windows XP registry you really should be careful and know what you’re doing. One accidentally deleted registry entry could bring your computer to a screeching halt. And that’s never any fun.

If you’re not too sure what to delete in your registry to improve your PC’s performance, seriously consider getting some registry cleaner software like X.

Okay. With that said here are 6 steps to backup the Windows XP registry:

Click Here To Back Up And Clean Your Windows XP Registry

  1. Click the Start menu in the lower left-hand corner of your screen.
  2. Then, click on Programs.
  3. Once you’re in Programs, click on the Accessories folder.
  4. Inside the Accessories folder, click on System Tools
  5. Now click System Restore
  6. Locate the option that says “Create a Restore Point”, then click Next.

At this point, it’s just a matter of typing in the name you want to give to the registry backup file. This will let you identify it whenever you actually need to restore your system’s registry back up to this point.

Then click “Create”.

Another way to get to the System Restore dialog box is simply this: Go to the Start menu. Then in the “run” textbox, type in the following command line:

%SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Then hit Enter. This will bring up the same dialog box. From here, just click “Create a restore point” then click next and give it a name.

Pretty easy, huh?

And here’s the best part. Now that you’ve got a backup of the Windows XP registry, you’re free to start tinkering around with it.

Just type in “Regedit” into the “RUN” textbox found in the Start menu. This will bring up the registry editor dialog box.

There you’ll see different registry directories. Then, when you click on the folders, they’ll expand to reveal even more directories and registry entries. From this point it’s up to you to decide what to delete and what to keep. Which means.. you really need to know what you’re doing.

Delete the registry entries you feel are no longer necessary and are not being used by any other programs.

And don’t worry. If you do end up deleting a registry entry that was important, you can always restore the entire registry. In fact, that’s what I’ll show you how to do in Part 2 of this article.

It’s also pretty easy to do. Especially now that you’ve got a backup of your Windows XP registry.

Alright, enough talk… See you on the next page!

To faster, zippier PC performance,

Eddie T.
